Local Donors' Funds Support the Visually Impaired
Recent grant awards were made possible by two longstanding funds at The Community Foundation — the Jennie C. Bronson Fund and the Albert Zunder Fund, established with a preference for aiding the visually impaired.
The Community Foundation’s Board of Directors recently awarded multi-year funding to several nonprofit organizations that serve people with visual impairments in Greater New Haven. The grants were made possible thanks to preference funds established decades ago.
The Community Foundation’s Board of Directors recently awarded multi-year funding to several nonprofit organizations that serve people with visual impairments in Greater New Haven. Announced in late 2021 and early 2022, the grants were made possible thanks to preference funds established decades ago.
The Jennie C. Bronson Fund and the Albert Zunder Fund were each established by forward-thinking donors who wanted to ensure that organizations serving the visually impaired would have the necessary resources to continue their important work for generations to come.
In 1976, Jennie C. Bronson established a preference fund at The Foundation by bequest to address two causes important to her: "... for the benefit of the Visiting Nurse Association and for the benefit of the visually impaired."
In 1951, the Albert Zunder Fund was established by bequest of Fannie Fern Falk, stating a preference to provide "aid for the visually impaired." Though historical records are incomplete, it's likely Falk was the late Zunder's sister, and the fund was a way to honor his memory – and the family's commitment to the Greater New Haven community – in perpetuity.
